#22 Green Heron The stocky and secretive Green Heron is a solitary hunter of small fish in dense marshes, ponds, and wooded riverbanks. A richly colored bird of chestnut and iridescent green, the Green Heron often raises and lowers its crest as it waits patiently for prey, and will sometimes drop “bait,” like a feather or twig, on the water’s surface to lure it in.
